What does Inquiry and Research have to do with each other?

Inquiry based research is a method of Inquiry Based Learning whereby students utilize a variety of information sources in order to deepen understandings, solve problems, make decisions, draw conclusions, and create new products and ideas. Research is more than investigation and is not limited to simple fact gathering. Effective research involves Inquiry: making connections, developing essential and guiding questions, seeking resources both primary and commentary, constructing deeper understandings, expressing new learning, and reflecting throughout the process.

Research is not easy and students need to know that! They will feel frustrated and overwhelmed at times, however, the process needs to be structured and scaffolded so that students have the appropriate tools needed for success.

This wiki has been created as a place for discussion about inquiry based research in the Social Studies curriculum in grades 5-8.
